Start with new build or existing pool
If there is already a concrete pool in the yard and the shell is sound, resurfacing is usually the place to start. A worn, rough or stained interior does not on its own mean you need a whole new pool. If the shell has cracked or moved, the job becomes structural, and the work you need is no longer simple maintenance.
If there is no pool yet, you are choosing a new build. The rest of this page helps you narrow that choice down.
Matching the pool to your yard
Plenty of space and a clear vision
A custom concrete pool is poured on site to your chosen shape, depth and finish. It suits buyers who want a particular layout, built-in steps or ledges, or a design that follows the line of the house and garden.
Tight or narrow backyards
A concrete plunge pool keeps the footprint small while still giving you somewhere to cool off on a humid Brisbane afternoon. It is worth a look for inner suburban blocks, townhouse yards and courtyards where a full-size pool would swallow the outdoor area.
Long, slim strips of land
A concrete lap pool is built for swimming lengths. If a side boundary or rear strip is long but not wide, a lap design can turn that awkward space into something useful for daily exercise.
Sloping or hard-to-dig sites
An above ground concrete pool sits partly or fully out of the ground. Ask about it where excavation is difficult or where a raised edge would work better with the slope of the block.
Matching the pool to how you will use it
- Relaxing and entertaining: a pool and spa combination gives you warm water for evenings alongside the main pool, built as one connected project.
- Fitness swimming: a lap pool puts length ahead of everything else.
- Cooling off with minimal upkeep: a plunge pool means less water to heat, treat and clean.
- A faster, more standardised build: precast concrete pools use shells made off site, which can simplify the on-site stage compared with a fully poured design.
Licensing and approvals worth checking
For new concrete pool construction in Queensland, look for a contractor whose QBCC licence is in the swimming pool construction class, as that covers concrete shells, steel reinforcement and formwork. A maintenance and accessories licence does not extend to building a concrete pool or carrying out structural repairs, so this matters for resurfacing jobs that turn out to involve the shell. A new pool also needs building approval from a building certifier before work begins.
Narrowing it down today
Before comparing quotes, note the rough length and width of the space you have, whether the ground slopes, and how close the area sits to fences, trees or the house. Then decide your top priority: swimming, relaxing, entertaining or keeping maintenance low. With those answers, picking between custom, precast, plunge, lap, above ground, a spa combination or a resurface becomes a much shorter conversation.
